The Scary Monster route is an amazing journey taking you all the way from the Ukiah Valley to the coast and back on beautiful rural roads. Please be clear, this is not a picnic. There are difficult climbs and technical descents.

The suffering begins quickly with a tough climb up Orr Springs Road. There are gorgeous views of the Ukiah Valley and the forested mountains between Ukiah and the coast. The route then drops past Orr Hot Springs and passes by the majestic redwoods of Montgomery Woods State Park.  You continue on through forested rural roads towards the coast, passing through the quaint town of Comptche.

Your journey continues to the coast through wooded roads and charming countryside. Just before reaching the coast, you’ll ride through part of the famed pygmy forest. After reaching Highway 1 on the coast, you head north for just a few miles, breathing the salt air of the Pacific Ocean before you head back inland. You’ll have a great view of the lovely town of Mendocino before you continue your journey heading back to Comptche. Finally, you’ll continue through the redwoods before climbing up the backside of Orr Springs Road and then dropping back to Ukiah and returning to Mendocino College. The Scary Monster is 96.9 miles long and has 10320 ft of climbing.
